Commissioners' Initiatives And Issues
The Lemoyne Connector

Cumberland County’s Position Regarding the Lemoyne Connector

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners is fully supportive and on the record in favor of the construction of a Grade Separation Crossing at the Lemoyne Connection. Cumberland County is the only local government to pledge real capital dollars ($500,000) for this transportation infrastructure project. We have been and will remain in direct communication with the Secretary of Transportation, Allen Biehler, on this important matter in collaboration with our fellow governmental jurisdictions in South Central Pennsylvania.

Once the Grade Separation Crossing is completed, we are interested in utilizing the Old Cumberland Valley Rail Bridge for use of mass transit, emergency services and public safety vehicles. The bridge crosses the southern end of City Island connecting downtown Harrisburg with Lemoyne. Like the Grade Separation Project, we have indicated to the Secretary of Transportation, the County is willing to financially support the construction and operation of the Busway Project. With the completion of the Norfolk Southern Lemoyne Connection and the Corridor One Busway, both freight and commuters will be able to move more efficiently and safely through South Central Pennsylvania.

Bio Fuel Initiative
In 2007 the Commissioners' began a bio fuel initiative. Hopefully, Cumberland County will lead by example for other local municipalities, school districts and businesses to follow.

I-81 Corridor Coalition
Commissioner Rick Rovegno has been spearheading this initiative in working with officials from six states the interstate traverses to form the I-81 Corridor Coalition. A twelve member Planning Committee consisting of diversified professionals has been established to create the vision and mission, as well as current goals and objectives. Once these have been developed, they will serve as the foundation by which to operate a formalized coalition to handle issues related to the corridor.
