The current WHO (World Health Organization) phase of pandemic alert is 6.
Phase 6, the pandemic phase, is characterized by community level outbreaks in at least one other country in a different WHO region in addition to the criteria defined in Phase 5 (below). Designation of this phase will indicate that a global pandemic is under way.
Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.
The following personal protective action guidelines and information should be shared in an effort to reduce and/or prevent the contraction or spread of swine flu:
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Stay home when you are sick or have flu symptoms.
Get plenty of rest and check with a health care provider as needed.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you against germs.
When soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizer.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.
Practice other good health habits.
Be physically active, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids, eat nutritious foods, and avoid smoking, which may increase the risk of serious consequences if you do contact the flu.
